Hiking Martial Glacier | Ushuaia - Argentina

Close to the city, Martial Glacier is a great option for hiking in the winter, and the views of Ushuaia are quite spectacular.

    Hiking Montanhismo

Hiking in Ushuaia should be on every adventure traveler’s bucket list. Even traveling in the winter, there are plenty of options of hiking and new places to discover. One of them is Glacier Martial, a stunning mountain that provides the backdrop of the town of Ushuaia and a beautiful view of the Beagle Channel.

We hired a Mountain Guide who helped us all the way. It was important to have an expert with us, especially because we were inexperienced with snow. He helped us with using crampons, identifying dangerous conditions, and keeping us in the trail.

In the bottom of the glacier, where we started to hike up, there is a ski center that provides infrastructure with parking lot and bathrooms. It is a wonderful hike, about three hours long and is denoted by a stunning mountain landscape. The walk up the glacier for the most part is fairly easy, although it was winter and we had to walk through snow. We used crampons and trekking poles, and both of them have proved really useful due the slippery ice and the ceaseless wind. The trail does get a little bit steep and treacherous towards the end, and we really had to be watchful. The view from the top of the glacier is pretty awesome, right over the city and across the Beagle Channel to Isla Navarino. This scenery was worth the effort of a bit of trekking.

We spent some time in the top, eating some sandwiches, drinking “mate” (or chimarrão, a typical hot drink from Argentina and Southern Brazil), admiring the landscape, and freezing haha.

Our way down was much easier and faster, we took some time to take pictures and record videos. It was a great time, and totally worth the effort. ♥

    Some tips:

→ It’s important to wear appropriate winter clothes, waterproof boots, gloves, hat, and thick socks, since your toes are the first place you’ll feel cold.

→ If you’re inexperienced in hiking in the snow, go with a qualified person. It can be dangerous for beginners. Our mountain guide was Gabriel Laudadio.

→ The weather in Ushuaia is very unpredictable, but checking the weather conditions previously still a good idea. In our case, we were lucky because it was a sunny (even though freezing) day.
